Route Description

The Teesdale Athletic Club Whorlton - Westwick - Town Pasture Lane is a 15.532 km (9.651 mi) circular route that takes you on a nice flat road into open countryside to the picturesque village of Whorlton just 4.8 km (3 mi) east of the town. On the return route we take a left at Westwick onto Mount Eff Road, reaching a 195 m elevation (11.1% gradient) at its maximum point, before returning to the leisure centre via Town Pasture Lane (Gypsy Lane).

Local Route Whorlton Westwick Town Pasture Lane

Starting at the Teesdale Leisure Centre, take a left onto Harmire Road and left again onto Bede Road, heading towards the petrol garage. Turning right into Victoria Road and left into Zetland Road opposite the Richardson Community Hospital. Follow the road right into Dawson Road which leads to Wilson Street passing the new Emergency Service Headquarters. Left onto Birch Road and finally left again onto Newgate. Passing The Bowes Museum on your left continue on Newgate which leads into Westick Road. Stay on this road all the way to Whorlton village, enjoying the flat smooth road surface in open countryside, passing East Shores Boarding Kennels and Cattery along the way.

At the 7.2 km mark, turn right at the T-junction leading you to the village triangular green. Follow the road round the green before heading back towards Barnard Castle on the same road in. Continue on this road until you reach Westwick Farm. Now turn right and follow the road through the farm. The road begins to climb reaching a 195 m elevation (11.1% gradient) at its maximum. Follow the road round the gentle bends before starting your descent towards Darlington Road. Once you reach the main road (A67) turn left and then immediately right on the access road for the Jersey Farm. Stay on this road, climbing initially passing a farm on your right then following the road round to the left descending gradually heading towards Stainton Grove. Continue on Town Pasture Lane (Gypsy Lane) keeping Stainton Grove to your right, until you reach the main road junction (A688). Here turn left and continue in the direction of Barnard Castle.

When you near the petrol garage, take the footpath directly opposite to the entrance to the garage taking you alongside Teesdale School. Continue along the footpath until you reach the steps which take you back to the front of the leisure centre. Remember to finish your run by completing your cool down and stretch exercises.
