Route Description

You'll always remember the first time you completed the Teesdale Athletic Club 6 Hills in Startforth training session. This training session just keeps on giving. Clear your mind of can't, stay strong!

Training Session Route: 6 Hills in Startforth

The session starts at the Teesdale Leisure Centre. A slow jog through Woodside onto Flatts Road heading to the start point of the first hill at the bottom of The Bank, on the junction of Thorngate. When you are ready, run up The Bank to the corner of Newgate, turn and start your jog recovery back to the bottom of The Bank. Check the training schedule for the number of reps required, either 1 or 2.

After completing the correct number of reps continue now along Thorngate crossing the footpath bridge over the River Tees. This marks the start of the second hill. Follow the footpath running up to The Lending taking the right hand fork. Once you reach the top, turn left and left again following the path back down toward the start point. Repeat as required.

Now follow the footpath heading towards The Sills (keeping the river to your right). Continue on The Sills until you reach the junction for Gill Lane. You are now at the start of the third hill. When instructed, start your ascent running up Gill Lane all the way until you reach the junction where Gill Lane meets Boldron Lane to your left and Low Startforth Road to your right. Turn and start your jog recovery back down Gill Lane to the start. Repeat as required.

Its a short jog to the start of the forth hill. From Gill Lane continue along The Sill until you reach the next junction on the left for Ullathorne Rise. When ready, start your run following Ullathorne Rise round to the right continuing to the top of the rise. Now turn around and start your jog recovery back to the start. Repeat as required.

After completing the forth hill continue along The Sill, passing the 16th Century Bridge on your right, until you reach the junction to Deerbolt Bank on your left. This is the start of the fifth hill. When ready, start your run heading up Deerbolt Bank. This will bring you onto Bowes Road. Continue until you reach the lamp post just before the junction. Turn around and begin your jog recovery back to the start. Repeat as required. Only one more hill to go!

From the bottom of Deerbolt Bank head back towards Barnard Castle crossing the 16th Century Bridge. The start point of the sixth and final hill is at the start of the Castle path just across the bridge (we've saved the best for last). When ready, begin your run following the Castle path keeping right heading up towards the entrance of the castle. When you reach the entrance to the castle, either turn around and start your jog recovery back to the start of the Castle path and repeat or wait for the rest of the group to finish. This marks the end of the sixth hill.

When the group has reassembled, and when instructed to do so, your Group Leader will guide you back to the Leisure Centre.
